Male nudes are the norm in Greek art, even though historians have stated that ancient Greeks kept their clothes on for the most part. New research suggests that art might have been imitating life more closely than previously thought. Nudity was a costume used by artists to depict various roles of men, ranging from heroicism and status to defeat. Hurwit's newly published research shows that the Greeks did walk around in the buff in some situations. Men strode about free of their togas in the bedroom and at parties called symposia, where they would eat, drink and carouse. Nudity was also common on the athletic fields and at the Olympic games. Because there are so many images of Greek athletes, some lay people have assumed the Greeks were in their birthday suits all the time. Warriors and heroes are often, but not always, represented in the nude. Artists demonstrated the physical prowess men used to defeat their enemies. But, as Hurwit said, if you can go into battle naked, you've got to be pretty good.

The Nude in Love

Today, we keep our nakedness to mostly private activities—bathing, sometimes sleeping , etc. Does the plethora of statues of naked men in Greek art mean they spent more time naked than we do in modern times? Were they just more comfortable with nudity, or at least depictions of it? Well, after a bit of research, I came across a paper by Jeffrey M. Hurwit, the Philip H. In real life, male nudity was mostly restricted to the bedroom and symposium in the private sphere, and to the stadium, gymnasium, and palestra in the public sphere. Symposia were also held by aristocrats to celebrate other special occasions, such as victories in athletic and poetic contests. Naked parties, on top of all that naked athleticism.

Anuradha Sroha 18 July min Read. Nudity in art first became significant in ancient Greece. The athletic competitions at religious festivals celebrated the male body as an embodiment of all that was best in humanity. While the female nude was a symbol of procreation and fertility, male nudity was associated with triumph, glory, and moral excellence. Let us look at some of the best male bodies in art history! Annibale Carracci — was an Italian painter, famous in Bologna and Rome. He was one of the promoters of the Baroque style of paintings. In Bacchus , Carracci creates a well-known figure from the classical mythology- Bacchus or Dionysus, the God of wine and merry-making. Here, Bacchus, is a handsome young man with golden ringlets, standing in an isolated landscape with his cup of wine. His pose is relaxed and he is staring right at the viewers, inviting them to join him for a drink.
