With desert peaks stabbing the sky and a thin blue ribbon of Dead Sea shimmering in the distance, the ghostly figures of around men and women -- painted head to toe in white -- began appearing from behind an outcrop. Each and every one of them was naked. Which could only mean one thing: World-renowned New York artist Spencer Tunick was back to photograph his latest installation. Known for coordinating large-scale nude photos in public places, from a Swiss glacier to the steps of the Sydney Opera House, Tunick is also here to help an old friend and collaborator, Ari Leon Fruchter, in his attempts to build a Dead Sea Museum. There will always be another leak, because there is always curiosity in the bodies of naked celebrity women. There is always danger in being an Other. P rivacy is a privilege. It is rarely enjoyed by women or transgender men and women, queer people or people of color.

High-spec cameras, filtering and high-speed internet connections mean you can have the idea, whip it or them out, take the snap and send with barely a moment's thought. But why the change? Is this purely a generational thing? The rules around sending nudes seem fairly simple, but boundaries are overstepped constantly — usually by men. I never send them under those circumstances.

Sculptors, painters and illustrators competed to celebrate the body and represent it in its original state, as evidenced by the works from ancient civilizations, notably Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Prehistoric representations of the naked human body can even be seen on the painted walls of caves and prehistoric statuary art.
